Greetings Directors of New York County Veterans Service Agencies, Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Sara Hill and I work with the New York State Office of General Services’ Department of Curatorial and Visitor Services. We create exhibits for the New York State Capitol, Empire State Plaza and the Vietnam Memorial Gallery in Albany, NY. We are working on an exhibit for the Vietnam Memorial Gallery opening in 2025. The exhibit will focus on letters sent to and from home by New York State service members during the Vietnam War. Types of questions we may explore include but are not limited to: What types of things did families write to servicemembers? What types of events taking place at home were communicated to loved ones in letters while they were overseas? How much did servicemembers reveal about their war experiences in letters home? In what ways were letters a comfort for service members? What types of care packages were sent abroad? What about those who did not have a home to write to? What about the families and loved ones whose letters were returned with the devastating news of loss? It is very important for us to get this right for our veterans and we rely on their voices and experiences to shape this exhibition. We would like to share our exhibition project with your County Veterans Service Agency and ask if you know any veterans from New York or families of Vietnam veterans who has such letters they would like to send to us, we would love to see scans or pictures!
